WHEN IT'S CHEAPER TO TRICK
“The receipt of a favor can become oppressive. It means you’ve been chosen because you’ are friend, not necessarily because you are deserving. There’s almost a touch of condescension in the act of hiring friends that secretly afflicts them.”-Robert Greene (48 Laws of Power)
It is often said that power is an aphrodisiac. But in marginalized and powerless communities, celebrity or status is often a more than adequate substitute. Take the case of Dr. Boyce Watkins. Watkins is a Ph.D and renown finance professor who made his rounds on more than a few talk shows. He garnered his reputation not by explaining the principles of his craft, but by appearing on TV as a panelist for discussions surrounding the American fetish of race.
As a result of his intellectual prowess and his unwavering stances on Black Americans, he won the appropriate nickname of "The People's Scholar." But after a round of rhetorical fist-a-cuffs with FOX Commentator Juan Williams on the network, Watkins aroused the ire of Williams' white co-signer, the former host of the O'Reilly Factor, Bill O'Reilly. O'Reilly retaliated by using his political celebrity to enact white collar retribution against Watkins by imploring his then employer, Syracuse University, to check him. This resulted in Watkins' resignation from his tenured position at Syracuse University.
Undeterred, Watkins struck out on his own. Using his vast intelligence, almost limitless skill set, and an iron will, Watkins became his own man and created his own entrepreneurial empire. As a financial adviser, he gained instant credibility as a result of his television appearances on FOX, MSNBC & CNN. He was suddenly in demand all over Black America.
Dr. Watkins is a supremely gifted man. But with his gift comes the curse of the flesh---------an almost unavoidable attraction to the most predatory and opportunistic women in Black America. Like the Roman Emperors of old, he just cannot resist the allure of the deadly nightshade that is Cleopatra.
In poor matriarchal communities, it is axiomatic to say that women exhibit the most extreme forms of hypergamy when it comes to dating and sex. In black america, this practice is particular deformed. The man that often sits atop the sexual food chain is one that is the polar opposite of the image presented in the dominant society. These men are more often than not, hyper-violent, semi-literate, sexually irresponsible, emotionally dwarfed and financially bereft.
Their exposure to the violence inflicted upon them by their impoverishment has more than equipped them to act as protectors. Thus, they imbue women with a degree of danger that is nothing short of exhilarating. This elixir of unpredictability makes these men sexually addictive. And this is most often their uniform----------------->
What does this have to do with Boyce Watkins? Answer: He is the antithesis of this image. In black America, this is the man that is most sexually desirable. Initially, the lack of economic stability often accompanying these men doesn't hinder their access to easy pussy in the black community. Generally, in the unspoken and un-written rules of sexual hierarchy, men like Watkins are simply a Plan B in the dating eco-system.
This peculiar arrangement often makes sex with attractive women taboo to men who don't fit the above description. As a result, it is not uncommon for men like Watkins to occasionally sequester themselves in invisible cells of sexual frustration with spontaneous bouts of involuntary celibacy. They often can't attract the women they want and don't want the women that they can attract.
These matrices are silent realities of millions of black men like Dr. Watkins. They feign contentment while hiding their uncontrollable desires for their ideal attractive sexual fantasies. They know this. More importantly, they women they desire know this. They read these men like urban crime novels. They know all the signs, symptoms, and cues of the sexually repressed. They intuitively understand that over-achievements often mask a deep sexual void in mens' lives. Because each achievement meant another long night of deafening silence and agonizing isolation. Women can literally smell this on a man. They are also keenly aware of its' repercussions.
This is what made Watkins vulnerable to the extortion that he is now experiencing at the hands of his former love interest and manager, Maria Lloyd-Richard. And this is why he is now being sued by Lloyd in Federal Court. Say what you will about Charlie Sheen's sexually reckless behavior, he understood that his celebrity made him a target for women with million dollar aspirations, but 10 dollar talent. His exposure to porn stars and call girls prepared him to deal with the hypergamous nature of female sexuality. He knew that when it came to him, they could not be trusted. He concluded that in a very real sense, he could only give them a little bit of fame and money upfront to assuage the guilt they felt from tricking with him.
And even though he knew he was infected with HIV, the upfront 10 million dollars he paid out to avoid lawsuits protected Charlie Sheen from the vindictiveness of those women who felt that they were entitled to more of his wealth than their pleasures deserved. Today he is living with two women free from possible criminal prosecution. And while he may be an E-TV Hollywood Story, he is presumably still earning the residual income from his movies and TV shows. And he is living the rest of his life, or what's left of it, in relative obscurity.
Boyce Watkins seeks to convince the world that he supports the talent and ambitions of black women. Even if it is at the cost of his own financial welfare. But he overlooks a very critical consequence of his generosity. Undeserved favors have a very short life span-------- Especially with women. While he may believe that his charity is endearing, it is actually repulsive. Women understand that nothing is free. They know that a man's gifts and generosity comes with strings. And when they smell the weakness of sexual desperation from overachieving, undesirable, non-select men, they will spare no expense to tip the scales of obligation in their favor at the drop of a knee.
This means that they will take every opportunity to erase the burden of debt that they feel from your undeserved charity. And the only way to do that is to take that which enslaves them to do your will, YOUR MONEY. But, as Charlie Sheen so brilliantly demonstrates, sometimes, it's cheaper just to trick.
